You can buy a ticket to any station on the Esk Valley Railway from anywhere in the National Rail Network. If a station is staffed or has a Ticket Vending Machine (TVM) you must purchase your ticket at the Station. Otherwise, please purchase your ticket from the conductor on the train. Dogs and cycles go free, though there is a maximum of two cycles per train and is at the guard’s discretion.

- York Shopper: visit York for £19.40 day return from Whitby, leaving on the 08:45 from Whitby. Change at Middlesbrough (not valid via Darlington) and arrive at 11:17 at York. Return on the 16:39 from York, arriving at Whitby 19:30. Use National Rail or Northern website to book.
- Tyne and Tees Day Ranger (Adult £25.60 Child £12.80) allows you to travel any time at weekends, on public holidays or after 08:45 Monday to Friday. The Day Ranger is attractive for journeys between Whitby and the Esk Valley, Darlington, Bishop Auckland, Shildon (for the Locomotion Railway Museum), Thornaby, Stockton, Hartlepool, Sunderland, Hexham, Morpeth, Newcastle, Northallerton and intermediate stations.
- Duo Tickets Two Adults travelling together (Off-Peak) £12.10 return Middlesbrough to Whitby.

Esk Valley Railway Residents’ Railcard Application Form – 2024
The popular Esk Valley Railcard saves you ⅓ off the majority of local rail fares, for only £10 annually. Not only that, but you’ll also gain other benefits, including ⅓ off North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
Who can apply?
- You can apply for an Esk valley Railcard if you are 16 and over and live in:
- The Hambleton, Scarborough or Ryedale Districts of North Yorkshire
- The Boroughs of Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland or Stockton.
- You have one of the following postcodes:
- DO 7, 8
- DL 2, 6, 10
- HG 4
- TS 1, 9, 10, 13, 15, 19
- YO 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 25, 26, 30, 32, 41, 60, 61, 62
Where can I use it?
The Esk Valley Railway Railcard entitles you to:
- Discounted fares between Whitby and Middlesbrough and intermediate stations on the Northern services.
- Discounted fares also apply between Whitby to Pickering on North Yorkshire Moors Railway services.
How much does it cost?
The Esk Valley Railcard can be bought for only £10.00 per person.
How long is the Railcard valid?
Esk Valley Railcards are valid for twelve months from the date of issue or commencement date.
How much can I save?
- 1/3 off normal adult train fares on the Esk Valley
- Up to 4 accompanying children under 16s also receive 1/3 off, which is based on 81% discount on the adult fares. There is a minimum child fare of £1
- 1/3 off North Yorkshire Moors Railway fares.
The Railcard is not valid for use with season tickets.
When your station is staffed you must purchase your ticket at the ticket office, otherwise please purchase your ticket from the conductor on the train.
How do I apply for an Esk Valley railcard?
You can buy a railcard from the following stations:

- Scarborough
- Thirsk
- Thornaby
- Malton
- Whitby
To apply for an Esk Valley Railway Residents’ Railcard, please download and print the form at the bottom of this page. Then take it to one of the stations listed above and pay using cash, debit or credit card. Please note, Northern will no longer accept cheques and so we cannot offer a postal service any longer as we do not advise sending cash in the post.
