Marton
James Cook, the world’s most famous navigator and explorer, was born at Marton in 1728. Although his cottage no longer exists here, a monumental granite vase marks its site at his birthplace museum in Stewart Park, a short walk from the station.
There are now 18 services Monday to Saturday between Nunthorpe and Middlesbrough via Marton and 10 each way on Sundays, all year round. Six services (Monday – Saturday) continue beyond Nunthorpe along the Esk Valley to Whitby. There are also two extended services that go beyond Nunthorpe; the 13:06 calls at Great Ayton and Battersby ONLY as does the 17:07.

Stewart Park - short walk from the station
Hosting the Cleveland Show each year in July. It’s a short walk from Marton Station to the Park.
Formerly the grounds of Marton Hall, this is Middlesbrough’s largest informal park, with large areas of open space, lakes, ponds, animal enclosures, woodland glades, a children’s play area and a cafĂ©; and it is here that you will find the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum.

Captain Cook Birthplace Museum
Stewart Park, Marton, Middlesbrough, TS7 8AT
This museum offers insights into James Cook’s early life, his seafaring career, the legacy of his voyages, and the experience of 18th-century sailors. Exhibits include charts from Cook’s voyages and his descriptions of Australian flora and fauna, as well as audio-visual presentations, hands-on interactive displays and original objects. There is also a temporary exhibition gallery with a regular programme of events.

Ormesby Hall - Short walk from the Station
Church Lane, Ormesby, nr Middlesbrough, TS7 9AS
An 18th-century Palladian mansion with exquisite interior decoration, paintings and furnishings, Ormesby Hall is a grade-1 listed building now owned by the National Trust. Its Old Wing contains a large permanent model railway exhibition. The Georgian stable block is home to the horses of the Cleveland Mounted Police. Refreshments are available in the tea-room.

Stewart Park
Stewart Park, is located in Marton (TS7 8AR) in south Middlesbrough. It covers approximately 120 acres, with open parkland on the northern side, and mature woodland and arboretum on the southern side. Stewart Park is one of seven parks in Middlesbrough to hold the prestigious Green Flag award.
